I Realized A Relationship was Toast After Watching A Movie
But now I’m no longer Seeking A Friend for the End of the World.
A long time ago, I cried watching Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. I don’t remember it being that moving or sad, but it made me cry — because it revealed to me a startling fact about my then-relationship.
I can’t even remember most of the story now, but I’ll never forget that revelation.
The movie follows characters Penny and Dodge, played by Keira Knightley and Steve Carell respectively. A doomsday meteor was heading towards earth and everyone was counting down to the day the meteor hits and their certain death.
Alone in his apartment, Dodge’s last days seemed destined to be as mundane as his life had been. Until Penny, his upstairs neighbor, climbed into his window getting away from an abusive ex. Together, they tried to find a way for Penny to get back to her family. Predictably, they had an unforgettable last adventure together.
I can’t even remember why Penny didn’t end up going back to her family. But she remained with Dodge and on the day the meteor hit the earth, the pair laid in bed, him holding her as the glow of the meteor lit up their faces.
